They hemmed and hawed and demanded crazy things from software developers trying to help them sell their own stuff. They had grand plans to have their own music stores online where they could make your life as a consumer suck. The TV/Movie studios are headed down the same path with the mantra that they won’t let what happened to the music labels happen to them.

And what happened to the music labels? They lost control to Apple, yes. But Apple also saved their asses. CD sales were plummeting and people could easily download music for free rather than pay the extortion fees secretly agreed on by the major labels. Apple came in with a simple idea: all songs just 99 cents. And look what happened.

Media companies, especially movie and television, hate consumers. They hate you. They have no intention of doing anything at all that you might enjoy. They only want to reach in and take every cent you have. Apple made a music store that consumers love and the music labels have been bitching ever since.

Mets Fan Sues Team, League, Players and Bat Maker After Getting Hit By Broken Bat

Mets Fan Sues Team, League, Players and Bat Maker After Getting Hit By Broken Bat:
Surprised he didn’t add the city, county, state, country, Earth and God to the list.

Draw online like you never have before

Draw online like you never have before:
royalbacon:

The DODOcase turned out to be a dud of a product and I realized that I didn’t want my iPad in it a second longer. So I went to the Apple Store last night and decided to buy the Sena ZipBook. While I was looking around at cases I kept seeing this metal object on the top shelf. It was so intriguing that it just kind of lingered in my mind. So when I was waiting to checkout, I went over and grabbed one. I decided I’d choose between the Compass and the Zipbook after using them both and return the one that didn’t work. Now I have both and I think they are fantastic products of the highest quality. I don’t want to return either of them.

This is just about the saddest thing I’ve read in a...

This is just about the saddest thing I’ve read in a while.

It’s such a good reminder to take risks and go against the grain. The buzz-word around here is that we need a vision. But so few people understand what that really means. Apple had a vision at the beginning of the decade and they worked toward that goal no matter what outsiders thought. The difference between Apple in 2010 and Apple in 2001 is remarkable. I still can’t believe how far they’ve come.

Some choice quotes:

“Apple’s problem is it still believes the way to grow is serving caviar in a world that seems pretty content with cheese and crackers,” gripes former Chief Financial Officer Joseph Graziano.

I give them two years before they’re turning out the lights on a very painful and expensive mistake”
- David A. Goldstein, president of researcher Channel Marketing Corp.

”They should let the news leak out, to convince the world how exciting their stuff is. That’s how everyone else does it.”

I know that not every risk-taker is rewarded with the kind of bounty that Apple has received. But I strongly believe that if you are working on what you love and you don’t accept anything other than the absolute best, only good things can come from that.

Consumer Reports ranks Apple's iPhone 4 best smartphone available

Consumer Reports ranks Apple's iPhone 4 best smartphone available:
Shared by Chris
Will this story populate every tech blog the way yesterday’s “can’t recommend” story did?

We had just found out that the bun in the oven was a boy. That was wonderful because it meant our search for a name could be focused on one gender. But we were having trouble finding the right name that didn’t seem too trendy but at the same time didn’t seem too odd. We definitely wanted to stay away from the more traditional names.

Near the end of the movie, Indiana Jones is clutching for dear life on the front of a truck while it rolls down the road at high speed. I think to myself, “I hope my boy is this cool.” Then I think of the name Indiana and laugh. I can’t name him Indiana. And then Harrison comes to mind. It doesn’t make me laugh. When I run it by the wife, it’s the first name idea I’ve contributed that she hasn’t immediately dismissed. We think about it.

We attend the first of 4 sessions on child birth and child-safety training. The instructor is going around the room asking each of the couples if they have names picked out. There are a few people who simply know what they’re going to name their child, but most say they haven’t decided or that it’s a choice of a few names. When she gets to us, I blurt out that we don’t know yet and my wife say’s “it’s Harrison” and looks at me with a smile. And so it was.

That would be the only class we would attend. Because shortly after midnight on the morning of July 13, my wife woke me up to tell me we needed to go to the hospital. It appeared my son had decided, 5 weeks early, that it was time to see what this world was all about.

Harrison Ford’s birthday is July 13. Nice shot, son.
